With the cold weather here I can finally partake in my favorite indoor activity without feeling guilty – binging a TV series. With the wide array of offerings from Netflix, Hulu, and all the major movie networks streaming services, my time to indulge has finally begun with endless options.
Some may call this lazy; I on the other hand, use these shows as a way to escape. Becoming engulfed in a series where for an hour (or more if you binge multiple episodes) you can escape the reality that it’s actually 5 degrees outside and feel like you are part of the story. So, you may ask, what have I been spending my time on? I have started to make my way through a number of different series – mystery, thriller, comedy. Find a list of my top 5 picks below.
The Five (Netflix)
A British-based crime TV show, The Five tells the story of a boy who went missing and 20 years later his DNA pops up in a murder scene. The season follows the four friends who were there the day he went missing. The twists and turns of their lives in present time reveal secrets from what actually happened on that day 20 years ago.
Glitch (Netflix)
An Australian based show, Glitch follows the story of a police officer who discovers that seven deceased individuals come back to life and shake up his world. Paired up with the local doctor, the police officer works to not only figure out how this happened but why. Meanwhile each of the formally deceased individuals learn about their past as they are living in the present time.
Okay, I know what you’re thinking – another zombie show. BUT, I promise, it’s so much more.
The Leftovers (HBO)
The Leftovers follows the residents of Mapleton, NY as they try to maintain a level of normalcy three years after “The Sudden Departure”, a global event where 140 million people disappeared without a trace. This series explores the ups and downs civilization has experienced since this chaotic event, while trying to cope with loss and understand what exactly happened.
I have to admit, this one tugs at the heart strings for sure, but it’s definitely worth it.
The Office (US Version – Netflix)
The Office is a widely recognized show that focuses on a group of co-workers at a paper company based in Scranton, PA. A hilarious, light-hearted show, this is the perfect option if you want to just throw on a few episodes to pass the time. Each episode is roughly only 20-25 minutes (yay no commercials) and with nine seasons, there are plenty of episodes to breeze through.
Riverdale (Netflix and currently on CW)
Cue my teenage fan girl status. This show checks all the boxes. Based on the Archie comic series, this show has murder, mystery, scandal, high school teenage drama, and more.
One extra for good luck:
Bobs Burgers (FOX)
Bobs Burgers is by far one of my favorite shows. This isn’t a show I binge watch, although I could. It’s just one of my overall go-to whenever I see it on. An animated series about Bob Belcher, who runs his own struggling burger restaurant, and his wife, Linda, and three kids will leave you crying laughing. The show is hilarious and witty. Not to mention that Linda, is everything I wish I could be and more. So much so, that I even dressed up as Linda for Halloween (evidence below).
